Hi, I am Shey!
Did I ever wonder if I would cook Sri Lankan food for a living? Nope, I did not.
My name is Shey, and I was born and raised in Sri Lanka. In 2013, I moved to the Netherlands to begin a new chapter of my life. I am a marketing professional who is increasingly focusing my career on the food industry—an area that has always held my passion.
Growing up in Sri Lanka, I didn’t formally learn to cook from anyone, but I had a natural affinity for flavors and a strong interest in what I put into my body. At school, I would often share rice packets with my friends, which introduced me to the diverse and vibrant world of Sri Lankan cuisine. This experience sparked my love for food.
Both my stepmother and father are excellent cooks, and while I never formally trained, I learned by watching them and tasting their creations. Over time, I developed an instinctive understanding of flavors and cooking techniques, which continues to inspire my culinary journey today.
Covid-19 and Curry O'Clock
I founded Curry O’Clock in 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The concept emerged after I hosted a Sri Lankan cooking workshop for a friend’s birthday, and I realized the potential to share my knowledge of Sri Lankan cuisine more broadly. My goal is to make Sri Lankan culture and food accessible to everyone. Since then, I have hosted numerous cooking workshops and expanded Curry O’Clock’s presence online.
Curry O’Clock is dedicated to teaching people how to prepare and enjoy fresh, authentic curries. My workshops, which are offered both in-person and online, focus on Sri Lankan cuisine, enabling participants to experience the vibrant flavours of our culture from the comfort of their own homes.
We have fully integrated technology to offer seamless online cooking workshops accommodating individuals and companies. With the increased demand for online team-building activities during the pandemic, our virtual workshops have become a popular option.
In addition to workshops, I also work as a private chef, create recipes and menus, offer “Freeze and Feed” meal preparation services for pregnancy mamas or anyone who wants to prepare meals in advance, and am open to any opportunity that involves food.
My mission is to spread the love of fresh food, promote healthy eating habits, and encourage good nutrition by sharing our culinary expertise with the world. Everyone deserves the knowledge and confidence to prepare healthy, delicious, and satisfying meals.
